What They Say |
|
“Within the complex and dynamic environment of flying, safety depends upon teamwork from a fluid, but defined command structure. Dr. Tarr's examination of leadership is an insightful perspective on what makes my cockpit work; as well as what makes an individual and a culture successful. He gives an entertaining and enlightening picture of the symbiotic relationship of leading and following. Everybody will enjoy and take something away from this book, from the quote in every chapter to the story that makes it come alive.” – Steve Speight, commercial jet pilot and former Navy flier
“My years as a student, teacher, player, and coach have taught me the value of leadership and the often overlooked value of followership. I’ve been in both roles, constructively supporting and questioning my superiors while expecting my team to do the same for me. Through thought-provoking quotes and engaging stories, Dr. Tarr has shown what anyone can do to achieve greater success by being a yes-you yes-now leader.” – Pat Bangasser, high school teacher and coach
“Many people like to see themselves as the leader but as Dr. Tarr points out, the reality is that we spend most of our time following, though often ineffectively. Even the most forthright leader is true to his or her own beliefs and goals, with the same diligence and dedication that he or she expects others to have. Dr. Tarr’s book is an enlightened view of the much neglected subject of effective following, by making the choice that you can lead right now, with no excuses. This simple but powerful concept touches the lives of everyone involved in any organization, work, family, or team. If you are in a position of leadership you will learn to recognize the qualities needed in your team to make your leadership effective. If you aspire to lead you will learn how to improve your chances through the effective support of your current leaders. If you wish to solidify your position in your organization you will learn how to maximize your contribution through high impact and effective following. If all three are applicable, and for many they are, then this book is thrice the insightful read. – James Dixon, Chief Executive Officer, Greythorn North America
Dr. Steven C. Tarr learned the power of yes-you yes-now leadership in both his executive roles and front-line jobs. He progressed to become a top executive in high technology companies and leading-edge health care institutions, first seeing the value of effective following early in his working life by cleaning offices, delivering newspapers, stocking grocery shelves, programming computers, and eventually leading large teams of people. In each case, he has been both a leader and a follower, learning to work with others to achieve team goals. He earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Washington State University and his doctorate from Portland State University. He enjoys volunteer coaching high school basketball and seeing the growth of people, young and old, as they persevere to achieve more than they thought possible. |
